This serene, ethereal woodblock print was created c. 1950s by Tokuriki Tomikichiro, one of the most important artists of the Japanese Shin-hanga (新版画) movement during the Showa period.
A student of the great Shin-hanga master Kawase Hasui (川瀬巴水), Tokuriki was celebrated for his landscape prints, especially his depictions of Japan’s famous bridges, scenic landmarks, and seasonal scenery. His works combine the decorative beauty of traditional Ukiyo-e with realistic light, shadow, and perspective, earning him wide international recognition.
This print depicts Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture — one of Japan’s Three Great Bridges and an iconic symbol of traditional Japanese wooden arch bridges.
The composition presents the bridge’s five massive stone piers and wooden arches from a low, upward angle. The heavy stone bases, curved bridge deck, and wooden railings are rendered with precise planes and strong lines, emphasizing the structure’s grandeur and architectural beauty. Tiny figures of pedestrians on the bridge heighten the sense of scale. In the upper right, cherry blossom branches with white petals and dark ink stems form a natural frame, softening the bold lines of the architecture while evoking classic Japanese spring imagery. The night sky is graded in soft ink washes, with a bright full moon hanging high, creating a calm, tranquil moonlit atmosphere. The water surface is rendered in pale gray with subtle ripples and reflections, enhancing the poetic quiet. On the opposite bank, traditional Japanese houses in flat blue tones with glowing yellow window lights add warmth and a sense of daily life.
The work is accompanied by the artist’s brief chronology, detailing his life, career, exhibitions, publications, and awards from his birth in 1902 through 1988.
Shin-hanga (新版画) Style
Unlike traditional Ukiyo-e, Shin-hanga retains woodblock lines and flat color areas while integrating Western realistic lighting, shading, and perspective to capture natural atmosphere authentically. It became the dominant style in 20th‑century Japanese printmaking.
This piece perfectly embodies Shin-hanga characteristics: precise architectural perspective, gentle moonlit shadows, and decorative cherry-blossom framing, achieving high artistic and visual appeal.
