This chawan carries a white glaze with a faint pinkish hue, its surface marked by crackle patterns and scattered dark iron spots. The foot ring is left unglazed, revealing the natural clay. According to the included leaflet, this commemorative piece was fired using sand from the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia. It was made in connection with the desert greening project at the Engebei demonstration zone, an environmental initiative begun by Dr. Seiei Toyama and continuously supported by the Taishoji Temple volunteer team. The bowl is accompanied by the leaflet and a wooden box bearing a brush inscription and a red seal from Taishoji Temple (Hoshosan). Hoshōzan Taishōji Temple A venerable temple of the Hongwanji branch of Jōdo Shinshū, founded during the Bun’ei era (1264–1275). Established by Shōnin Gensei and closely connected with Shōnin Rennyo, the temple assumed its present name in 1668. Its main hall was carefully restored in 2018. Taishōji is also distinguished by its environmental efforts through the “Amida no Mori – Green Volunteer Corps,” which has contributed to the planting of three million trees in the deserts of Inner Mongolia.
