Gewinner des Premierminister-Preises Toa Sekiguchi – „Boot aus Bambusgras“ - Holz - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)

Item Description: This is a stunning creative Kokeshi doll titled "笹舟 (Sasafune / Bamboo Grass Boat)" by the highly acclaimed artist Toa Sekiguchi. The most remarkable feature of this piece is the body, lavishly covered in gold leaf, which serves as a metaphor for the shimmering surface of a river. On this golden canvas, delicate "Sasano-ha" (bamboo leaves) are intricately engraved, depicting the poetic scene of a small bamboo boat floating downstream. The splashes of pink and white pigment evoke the imagery of water spray or drifting flower petals, adding a vibrant seasonal breath to the composition. With its serene, slightly pensive facial expression and minimalist oval form, this doll represents a perfect harmony of traditional craft and modern abstract art. It comes with a wooden sign (Tatefuda) featuring the artist's signature and the work's title. Artist: Toa Sekiguchi (b. 1942) is a premier Kokeshi artist based in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. Born into a lineage of master craftsmen—his father was the legendary Sansaku Sekiguchi—Toa has carved out his own distinguished reputation. His career is marked by numerous prestigious accolades, culminating in the Prime Minister's Award (Naikaku Sori Daijin Sho) in 2001, the highest honor in the field. His works are celebrated for their sophisticated use of gold leaf, carving techniques, and a modern aesthetic that transcends the boundaries of traditional folk toys, elevating them to fine art.
