Universal - THE MUMMY 1932 BORIS KARLOFF VINTAGE STILL

This vintage silver gelatin photograph from 1932 is in excellent condition, displaying only a few stains and smudges in the background. Vintage original photographs from the classic Universal Horror films of the 1930s are extremely rare and this image features an outstanding representation of Karloff in one of his most iconic roles. "The Mummy" is a supernatural horror film directed by Karl Freund for Universal. Boris Karloff stars as Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian mummy who was killed for trying to bring his deceased lover, Anck-es-en-Amon, back to life. When a group of archaeologists uncovers him and unintentionally revives him, he takes on the identity of a contemporary Egyptian named Ardath Bey. He then embarks on a quest to find Anck-es-en-Amon, whom he believes has been reincarnated in the present day. Universal's make-up artist Jack Pierce researched photos of Seti I's mummy to create the look for Imhotep. Starting at 11 a.m., Pierce worked on transforming Karloff, using cotton, collodion, and spirit gum on his face, applying clay to his hair, and wrapping him in linen bandages that were treated with acid and baked in an oven. The transformation was completed by 7 p.m. Karloff filmed his scenes until 2 a.m., and it took an additional two hours to remove the make-up. Created by the legendary makeup artist Jack Pierce, Karloff's portrayal as the bandaged corpse is showcased beautifully in this publicity image. Shipping with strong protection.
