───────
This refined Japanese lacquerware fubako (文箱, document box) features an elegant gold maki-e design of pine branches set against a deep black urushi lacquer ground, centered around a prominent chrysanthemum crest (kikumon).
The composition highlights finely rendered pine needles in delicate gold tones, symbolizing longevity and resilience, while the chrysanthemum motif—resembling the traditional sixteen-petal imperial form—adds a sense of formality and cultural prestige. In Japanese decorative arts, the chrysanthemum is closely associated with nobility and auspicious symbolism, giving the piece a dignified and timeless character.
Fine gold linework defines the branches with precision, while subtle variations in gold application create depth and visual rhythm across the surface. Areas of softly dispersed gold powder, reminiscent of nashiji-style techniques, produce a gentle shimmer that enhances the richness of the lacquer.
The piece is identified as Yamanaka lacquerware (山中漆器) based on the original packaging and accompanying leaflet. Yamanaka lacquerware is a historic tradition known for its refined finishing techniques and practical durability, developed in the Hokuriku region.
Despite being produced in the late Shōwa period, the work demonstrates solid craftsmanship and retains a timeless aesthetic suitable for both traditional Japanese interiors and modern decorative settings.
The interior is finished in smooth black lacquer, offering a clean and refined contrast to the exterior decoration.
