This is a set of three traditional Tsugaru-style (Onto-style) kokeshi dolls from Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture. As indicated on the bottom of the box, these are valuable works by three prominent craftsmen (artists) representing the Tsugaru style.
Craftsman Details
Yoshiki Sato
The eldest son of Zenji Sato, a master craftsman of the Tsugaru style. He studied under his father, inheriting the tradition, and also served as the chairman of the Tsugaru Kokeshi Craftsmen's Association. He is known for preserving the tradition of Onto kokeshi dolls while also actively working on the restoration of older styles such as the Kohei-style. He passed away suddenly in 2007.
Toshiyuki Kojima
An Onto craftsman who studied under Zenji Sato. His dolls are characterized by their refined features and the beautiful "peony pattern" painted on them, which originates from the Tsugaru clan's family crest. Like Yoshiki Sato, he served as chairman of the craftsmen's association and made significant contributions to the development of the style.
Zenzo Yamaya
He is a craftsman from the Yamaya family, a long lineage of woodworkers in Nuruyu. He inherits the Yamaya family's unique simple yet powerful forms and traditional styles rooted in the region.
Product Features
Nuruyu Kokeshi Style: The dolls exhibit the distinctive beauty of kokeshi dolls originating from Nuruyu Onsen, including the "built-in" technique where the head and body are one piece, the painting of Ainu patterns and peony flowers, and the extremely slender waist.
Value: These are all works by important craftsmen who supported the tradition of Nuruyu, and the works of Yoshiki Sato and Toshiyuki Kojima, in particular, are still cherished by many enthusiasts today due to their high level of skill.
