This medical diagnostic instrument operates using the classical acid haematin method, in which a blood sample is mixed with hydrochloric acid and visually compared to a calibrated reference scale. The set includes the comparator block, graduated measurement tube, multiple glass pipettes, and additional components, all housed in the original fitted case. The glass elements are intact, and the instrument remains in good condition with visible traces of historical use. The interior is lined with original wool felt, typical for mid-20th century scientific instrument cases. The set appears largely complete; small consumable components such as rubber elements are not present. Such haemometers were widely used in hospitals, laboratories, and field medicine throughout the early to mid-20th century, before the introduction of automated analysis methods. This example is attributed to German manufacture, dating to approximately the 1930s–1950s.
