Asmat Cassowary Bone Knife – West Papua A remarkable traditional knife made from cassowary bone, originating from the Asmat region of West Papua. This type of weapon was crafted using the long leg bone of the cassowary (Casuarius), a large flightless bird native to New Guinea, whose bones are extremely dense and durable. The blade retains the natural elongated form of the bone, carefully shaped and sharpened to create a surprisingly solid and effective defensive weapon. Cassowary bone knives were traditionally used in close combat and personal defense, valued for their strength and resilience. The handle is richly decorated with woven natural fiber, forming a textured grip and stylized head. The face is constructed using cowrie shells, while the sides are adorned with beaded ornaments and cassowary feathers, creating a striking ceremonial appearance that reflects the artistic traditions of the Asmat people. Interestingly, despite its effectiveness as a weapon, pieces of this type were also commonly used as fly swatters, demonstrating the blend of practicality and symbolism typical of many traditional Papuan objects.
