This impressive fossil pelvis belongs to Hippopotamus lemerlei, one of the extinct Malagasy hippopotamuses native to Madagascar. The specimen dates to the Quaternary period (2.58–0 million years ago) and is preserved in natural condition, with no artificial restoration. Malagasy hippopotamuses closely resembled modern hippopotamuses and pygmy hippopotamuses in overall anatomy, while being generally smaller in size. Fossil evidence suggests that at least one species of Malagasy hippopotamus survived until approximately 1,000 years ago, making these animals among the most recent large mammals to disappear from the island. The pelvis is robust and well-defined, clearly showing the broad iliac blades, acetabular regions, and sacral articulation, offering valuable insight into the locomotion and body structure of this extinct species. The bone surface displays authentic fossil texture and coloration consistent with long-term burial and mineralization. Importantly, the specimen is professionally mounted on a custom display base, as visible in the photograph. This presentation not only enhances its visual impact but also significantly increases its scientific, educational, and collectible value, making it suitable for museum display or a high-end private collection. Overall, this is a rare and striking Quaternary fossil, combining strong anatomical presence, excellent preservation, and elevated value due to its mounted display.
