In Noh theatre, Uba represents an elderly woman. The mask is characterized by deeply carved wrinkles across the forehead and cheeks, yet retains a refined and dignified expression that conveys both age and spiritual presence. It is often associated with roles such as the spirit of the paired pine trees in the celebratory play Takasago, where the aged figure embodies longevity, harmony, and divine grace. The mask is finely hand-carved from wood and finished with traditional gofun (oyster shell pigment), giving the surface its soft, pale tone. The reverse shows careful chisel work, highlighting the craftsmanship. It is inscribed in gilt with the name of the mask and a date corresponding to March 1997. The artist’s carved seal by Motoyasu (基保) is also present. The accompanying brocade bag features a decorative textile pattern. A sewn cloth label on the bag bears the name Uba along with the same period notation. Cord is attached to the mask. The condition reflects age and use. The surface shows overall yellowing due to aging of the pigment. There are fine cracks in the coating around the eyelids and near the nose. Minor abrasions and small areas of paint loss are visible. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the condition. Dimensions: approx. H 21.5 cm W 13.9 cm D 8 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
