Known also as Zaigo Chūjō, he is associated with elegance, romance, and a sense of melancholy, often linked to tragic or emotionally complex roles. The expression is subtle and introspective, with gently lowered eyes and delicately carved features conveying quiet sorrow. The vertical shading of the eyebrows enhances this refined and wistful character, typical of masks used in plays where the role often appears as a defeated warrior spirit. The mask is hand-carved from wood and finished with traditional gofun (crushed oyster shell pigment), giving the surface its soft, luminous texture. The forehead features the classical aristocratic “hikimayu” style (painted eyebrows), while the teeth are blackened (ohaguro), reflecting Heian-period noble aesthetics. The reverse is lacquered in a warm brown tone, allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible, demonstrating careful craftsmanship. A cord for wearing the mask is attached. Condition is good overall for a vintage piece, with expected signs of age and use. There are surface scuffs, minor blemishes, and a small paint loss along the edge. Slight discoloration and wear can also be observed, particularly around the mouth and surface. Please refer carefully to the photographs for full condition details. Dimensions: approx. H 20.7 cm W 13.5 cm D 7.2 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
