This charming pair of Japanese incense burners, crafted in cast copper during the Meiji period, takes the form of delicately modelled birds, each with its own distinctive character and setting. The set comes complete with its original wooden storage box, adding to its authenticity and collectible appeal.
Each piece presents a different poetic scene inspired by nature. One depicts a small, rounded bird with a short beak, perched atop a cut bamboo stalk surrounded by bamboo leaves. This motif evokes sparrows resting among bamboo, traditionally symbolising resilience and harmony with nature. The other features a long-beaked wading bird, reminiscent of a snipe, standing gracefully upon a large leaf, a design that conveys quiet elegance and the tranquillity of wetlands.
Both birds are ingeniously constructed, with their wings forming removable lids. Incense can be placed inside the hollow bodies, and the fragrant smoke gently escapes through small perforations in the wings, creating a refined and atmospheric effect when in use. The sculptural quality of the pieces allows them to function equally well as decorative objects when not in use.
As period works, both items show signs of age and use. There is overall surface wear, including scratches, dirt, and areas of patina with verdigris corrosion consistent with aged copper. The long-beaked bird has slight looseness around the leg joint, and there is a noticeable crack to the leaf-shaped base. The wooden storage box also shows age-related wear, including stains, dirt, and a small chip to the lid. Please refer to the photos for details.
Dimensions: approx. H 9.5-14 cm W 11.6-15 cm D 7-8.8 cm
