A refined black and brown lacquered kazari-dana 飾り棚 (display cabinet), decorated with a lively scene of boats laden with bundled reeds or firewood drifting across turbulent waters, with some of the bundles slipping into the waves. The inside of the doors display flights of plovers 千鳥 (chidori).
The openwork cabinet is constructed with an asymmetrical arrangement of shelves, incorporating four sliding doors and a pair of hinged doors. The pillars are inlaid with shimmering blue mother-of-pearl. A very charming detail is found in the small thumb grips of the sliding doors, each set with miniature carp.
The decoration is executed in hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer), in tones of gold and silver against a glossy black and brown ground. The corners are fitted with brass protective mounts. Signed on one of the sliding panels.
Both decorative and functional, the cabinet provides space for the display of objects such as ceramics or ikebana, while also offering enclosed storage for smaller items such as documents or utensils.
Period: Japan – Shôwa period (1926-1989)
