Fukuoka ishi’dôrô 石燈籠 (Stein-Gartenlaterne) - Lavagestein, vulkanischer Stein - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit (erste Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts)
A very rare two-part lava stone garden lantern, known as ishi’dôrô 石燈籠, originating from Fukuoka 福岡.
Crafted from volcanic stone sourced from the same region, these lanterns are a distinctive regional type, commonly seen placed along the streets of Fukuoka.
The post, known as sao 竿, is slightly tapered and rectangular, symbolizing chi 地 (earth). The upper part consists of different elements in one section, starting with the chûdai 中台 (platform), representing sui 水 (water), which connects to the hibukuro 火袋 (light chamber). This transitions into the square roof 笠 (kasa), symbolizing fû 風 (air), with slightly curved points, and is finally topped by an ‘onion’-shaped knob, representing kû 空 (void or spirit), reaching towards the sky. The hibukuro 火袋 features a pair of rectangular openings opposite each other, along with a reticulated sun and moon window, allowing for a light source to be placed within.
Approx. dimensions:
Height 90 cm, Width 24.7 cm, Depth 23.3 cm.
Dating such stone lanterns is challenging, but we estimate this piece to be from the late Edo period (first half of the 19th century). It has developed an appealing outdoor patina, with some moss covering, having been placed outside for many years. In very good condition. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
For safe transport, we will use a wooden pallet and secure packaging.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
