Antikes japanisches Jingasa-Helm - Außergewöhnliche Edo-Zeit Samurai-Jingasa mit Goshichi-no-Kiri-Wappen (五七桐家紋) – Imperiales Symbol – - Japan - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)

This is a rare and highly refined Japanese jingasa (陣笠), a lacquered samurai hat dating to the Edo period (1603–1868). The elegant, wide and gently curved form is coated in deep black lacquer, creating a powerful contrast with the boldly applied gold Goshichi-no-Kiri crest (五七桐). The condition remains relatively good, with only minor age-related wear that enhances its authenticity and historical presence. About the Goshichi-no-Kiri Crest The Goshichi-no-Kiri (五七桐) is one of the most prestigious and historically significant crests in Japan. Originally associated with the Imperial Court, it was later bestowed as a mark of exceptional honor and authority. Most notably, it became closely linked to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan’s greatest unifiers, who was granted the right to use this emblem as a symbol of supreme power. Since then, the kiri (paulownia) crest has represented governance, legitimacy, and elite status. Even today, it is used as an official emblem of the Japanese government. Owning an object bearing this crest suggests a strong connection to authority, whether through direct service, affiliation, or symbolic representation. Historical and Artistic Value Jingasa such as this were not merely protective headgear; they were important identifiers of rank, allegiance, and presence on the battlefield. The bold placement of the crest ensured visibility, projecting both identity and prestige. The refined lacquer finish, balanced proportions, and dignified simplicity reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the Edo period, where functionality and artistry were seamlessly combined. This is not just a piece of armor, but a symbol of power and cultural identity from feudal Japan. Items bearing the Goshichi-no-Kiri crest are especially sought after, making this an excellent acquisition for collectors of samurai artifacts and Japanese history. Jingasa: "Jingasa" is a hat that foot soldiers and miscellaneous soldiers used in the camp from the Muromachi period onwards. It was worn to protect the head as a substitute for a helmet. Jingasa were made of thin iron, leather, paper, and similar materials, with lacquer applied to the surface. In later times, lacquered hats with upturned edges were used for the outings of samurai. Over time, they evolved into items that incorporated artistic designs and materials reflecting social status and class. During the Edo period, they were often black lacquered with the family crest in gold, and were used by the shogun and his vassals for outdoor activities. Height: 7.0 cm Width: 38.1 cm Depth: 38.8 cm Weight: 580 g Condition: This item dates back to the Edo period. There are scratches, scuffs, stains, peeling, dents, mold, and other damage, but it is in good condition considering its age. We have posted many photos, so please take a look. Atention: The items listed for sale are all used collectibles.
