This type of vessel was traditionally used for heating and serving stew, an essential element of daily meals on the Ndop plain. This example is appealing for its thick smoke-blackened patina, modest incised decoration, and expressive silhouette. Opposite the spout, a small anthropomorphic handle gives the piece an additional sculptural quality and reinforces its distinctive character. A very authentic domestic object, both tactile and visually powerful. Condition Wear, firing irregularities, surface abrasions, and age-related losses consistent with use.
