This is a bronze lantern from the Edo period of Japan. Its design is simple and elegant, forged entirely from bronze with a naturally rich patina, showcasing the beauty of age.
The lantern features a classic lantern design: a pearl-shaped knob with a handle at the top, a hexagonal honeycomb openwork structure in the middle, and a petal-shaped base. Heart-shaped perforations add detail, combining practicality and decoration.
Of particular note is the clear inscription on the lantern—"September of the ninth year of Tenpo" (1838)—accompanied by a name/patron's inscription, providing a clear historical date and cultural context, making it a valuable historical artifact.
The lantern also features a small, operable door for holding candles, making it a complete functional item and a typical example of traditional lighting.
Period: 天保九酉九月(1838) was carved on the lantern. Tenpo Kyunen (Tenpo Kyunen) is the 9th year of Tenpo in the Edo period of Japan, 1838.
