Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima (Rio de Janeiro, 22nd September 1976), commonly known as Ronaldo, is a Brazilian retired footballer who played as a striker. He is the current owner and board chairman of Spanish football club Real Valladolid. He starred for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, among other clubs.
Known as ‘O fenômeno’ (the genius in English), he is considered by different sports governing bodies, personalities and media as the best forward centre in the history of football, as well as one of the best, top scoring attackers. At the peak of his career his speed, dribbling and definition were remarkable. For all these skills he was inducted into the FIFA Hall of Fame in 2016.
Leading figure of the historic Brazil national team that won the World Cup in 2002. With his national team he also won another World Cup (1994), a Confederations Cup (1997), a bronze medal in the Olympic Games (1996), two Copa América (1997, 1999) as well as a runner-up position in the 1998 World Cup. His track record is completed at club level with thirteen titles, nine of them in Europe, playing for PSV Eindhoven, Fútbol Club Barcelona, Football Club Internazionale, Real Madrid Club de Fútbol and Associazione Calcio Milan.
He won the FIFA World Player of the Year three times (1996, 1997, 2002), the Golden Boot (1997) and the Ballon d'Or twice, in 1997 and 2002. He also won the 1998 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball and the 2002 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, among other awards. With 15 goals, he was the all-time highest goalscorer in that tournament, the most prestigious at national team level in the world, until German player Miroslav Klose broke his record his record in 2014. He is also the second-highest goalscorer for the Brazil national team with 67 goals, only ten goals behind Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pelé’.
