CELEBRATED BOOK by great Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen.

'Photography is the way I get to grapple with all the things I’m curious about.'
- Jonas Bendiksen -

'Imagined as a sequel to the Old and New Testaments of the Bible Jonas Bendiksen's 'The Last Testament' features visual accounts and stories of seven men around the world who claim to be the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Building on biblical form and structure, chapters dedicated to each Jesus include excerpts of their scriptural testaments, laying out their theology and demands on mankind in their own words.'
(from the publisher)

'Through Bendiksen's personal testimonies and intimate portraits, 'The Last Testament' investigates the boundaries of religious faith, and a world in need of salvation, yearning for a new prophet. Whether escaping an angry mob in the streets with the Jesus of Kitwe, joining a Messianic birthday pilgrimage in Siberia, or witnessing the End of Days with Moses in South Africa, Bendiksen immerses himself among the disciples of each Jesus. He takes at face value that each is the one true Messiah returned to Earth, to forge an account that's both a work of apocalyptic journalism and of a compelling artistic imagination.'

Aperture, New York. 2017. First edition, first printing.

Hardcover (as issued). 165 x 240 mm. 468 pages. Photos: Jonas Bendiksen. Text in English.

Great photobook - in perfect condition.

Jonas Bendiksen began his career at the age of nineteen as an intern at Magnum Photos’ London office, before beginning his work as a photographer in Russia, resulting in his first book, Satellites (Aperture, 2006). The Places We Live (Aperture, 2008) told the story of twenty families living in urban slums across the world, with exhibitions of the work combining still photography, projections, and voice recordings. Bendiksen’s awards include an International Center of Photography Infinity Award, 2003; Telenor International Culture Prize, 2008; and several World Press Photo and Pictures of the Year awards. His work has been widely published by GEO, the Sunday Times Magazine, and National Geographic magazine. He has been a member of Magnum Photos since 2004, and lives near Oslo.

'Jonas Bendiksen’s sharply evocative images explore themes of community, faith, and technology. Born in Norway in 1977, he began his career at the age of 19 as an intern at Magnum’s London office before leaving for Russia to pursue his own work as a photojournalist. Throughout the several years he spent there, Bendiksen photographed stories from the fringes of the former USSR, a project that was published as the book Satellites (2006). Following this, he experimented with 360-degree photography in his book and 16-projector installation The Places We Live (2008), about daily life in four urban slums.
In 2017, he published The Last Testament, which told the story of seven men who all claimed to be the biblical Messiah returned to earth. The Book of Veles from 2021 probed the vulnerabilities of our perceptions and became hotly debated after Bendiksen revealed that what had appeared to be a classical piece of photojournalism was in large part synthetic computer-generated renderings.
His editorial clients include magazines such as National Geographic, Stern, Time, Newsweek, the Sunday Times Magazine and the Guardian Weekend. On the commercial side, he has done projects for HSBC, Canon, FUJI, BCG, Red Bull, and Land Rover. Bendiksen became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2004 and a full member in 2008. He lives with his wife and children outside Oslo, Norway.'
