Muramatsu Ryūen - 47 Rōnin - Japanischer Holzschnittdruck - Ukiyo-e - Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit

Artist: Utagawa Kunisada / Toyokuni III (歌川国貞 / 三代豊国, 1786–1865) Muramatsu Kihei Nyūdō Ryūen (村松喜兵衛入道隆圓) Seki Sanjūrō III (關三十郎) Series: Seichū Gishi Den (誠忠義士伝) Technique: Woodblock print (ukiyo-e), color (nishiki-e) Date: Japan, 1864 (late Edo period) Publisher: Ishida Eisuke Series: Seichū Gishi Den (誠忠義士伝) – Stories of the Faithful Samurai (aka. 47 Ronnin) Format: Ōban, approx. 35 × 24 cm (14 × 9 inches) Signature: Signed Kunisada 1. Impression & Colors: A strong, confident impression — bold keyblock lines, well-saturated colour, and the distinctive visual grammar of the series all intact. Seki Sanjūrō III commands the sheet as the tonsured, battle-hardened Muramatsu Kihei: sword raised overhead in a single, decisive arc, the blue-grey steel of the blade catching the cold light, while the lower hand grips the second hilt in readiness. 2. Paper: Trimmed to the image with minimal margins, consistent with album mounting. The paper displays the expected character of over 160 years of age. Some minor toning overall; otherwise clean and stable. No significant damage, repairs, or losses. 3. Muramatsu Kihei Nyūdō Ryūen — the warrior-monk of the league Muramatsu Kihei Nyūdō Ryūen (村松喜兵衛入道隆圓, 1641–1703) was the oldest of the Forty-Seven Rōnin — at sixty-two, the elder statesman of the vendetta. A senior retainer of Asano Naganori with a stipend of 200 koku, he had served the clan through decades of peacetime administration before the Genroku incident overturned everything. In the years following Asano's forced suicide in 1701, Muramatsu maintained the outward appearance of withdrawal from the world, having taken Buddhist vows — the name Nyūdō ("one who has entered the Way") signals this formal renunciation — while secretly remaining committed to Ōishi Kuranosuke's conspiracy. On the night of the raid in the 12th month of 1702, Muramatsu joined the front-gate party alongside Ōishi, his age apparently no impediment to the rigours of a winter assault. His presence in the league carried symbolic as much as martial weight: that the eldest and a man of religion should have kept faith until the end was understood by contemporaries as a powerful statement about the nature of loyalty. Granted seppuku with his comrades on the 4th day of the 2nd month, 1703, he was buried at Sengaku-ji, where his grave is still honoured today. 4. The Seichū Gishi Den Series: Loyalty, Theatre, and the Forty-Seven Rōnin Kunisada's Seichū Gishi Den is one of the artist's most ambitious late-career series, depicting all forty-seven loyal retainers plus key associated figures as portrayed by the leading kabuki actors of the day. It is a masterful fusion of two of Edo Japan's great cultural obsessions — the Chūshingura vendetta legend and the kabuki theatre. Each print pairs a historical warrior with a contemporary actor, giving us both a gallery of heroes and a snapshot of the Edo theatre world at its peak. With its consistent design, bold compositions, and rich biographical texts, the series is a collector's treasure — each sheet adds another chapter to Japan's most beloved tale of loyalty and sacrifice.
