【Product details】
This varied collection consists of nine complete orin bell sets dating from the Showa period. Each ensemble includes an orin bell, a cushion, a stand, and a striker used in Buddhist ritual practice and meditation.
The collection features both copper and brass bells in a variety of sizes and finishes, ranging from softly patinated metal examples to darker lacquered styles. One bell is decorated with a phoenix motif, a traditional symbol associated with rebirth, harmony, and auspicious renewal. The stands are made from both wood and plastic, while the cushions are covered in richly coloured brocade fabrics with floral and arabesque patterns that reflect traditional Japanese Buddhist aesthetics.
The accompanying strikers include four plain wooden examples and five wrapped in decorative fabric. Together, the sets display an appealing mixture of styles and materials accumulated over time through practical ritual use.
These bells are used in Buddhist rituals to punctuate prayers and moments of meditation with a distinct, resonant chime. Unlike Himalayan singing bowls, which are rubbed in a circular motion, orin bells are gently struck to produce a single, fading tone that creates a serene atmosphere.
The bells, stands, and strikers show age-related wear, including scratches, scuffs, patina, stains, blemishes, and areas of paint loss. The cushions show overall fading, discolouration, and dirt accumulation. One cushion has a small burn hole where the fabric appears to have opened from heat exposure. Some of the wrapped strikers also show fabric wear and peeling.
