Title: Large “Mountain Path” Creative Kokeshi by Award-Winning Usaburo Okamoto Item Description: This is a large creative kokeshi titled 山路 (Yamaji, “Mountain Path”) by first-generation Usaburo Okamoto. The body features deeply carved, undulating grooves that appear to evoke a winding mountain road. The dark, richly textured torso contrasts beautifully with the pale wooden head, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence. Maple-leaf motifs are carved near the lower body, and the artist’s signature is visible on the side of the foot. At 44 cm tall, this is an unusually imposing work with a powerful vertical form. There are surface scratches and age-related marks, especially on the head and base, as shown in the photos. Please review the images carefully for condition. Artist: Usaburo Okamoto, known as the first-generation Usaburo, was born in 1917 in Shinto Village, Gunma Prefecture, and passed away in 2009. He began making kokeshi in 1950 and founded Usaburo Kokeshi Studio in 1979. He is known for establishing a distinctive creative kokeshi style using carving, pyrography, and three-dimensional surface expression. He actively used woods such as zelkova and chestnut, and helped develop Usaburo Kokeshi Studio into one of Japan’s leading modern kokeshi workshops. His works received many awards, including prizes from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and other major kokeshi competitions.
