Kabuki Actor Print “Ichimura Kakitsu” - Kunisada - Utagawa Kunisada (1785-1865) - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit
Original Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a kabuki actor in an imposing theatrical pose, carrying long weapons against a dramatic stage-like backdrop of pine and bamboo. The bold stance, exaggerated costume, and expressive facial features are characteristic of the highly dynamic actor portraits that made Utagawa Kunisada one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e masters of the 19th century. Kunisada produced thousands of kabuki-related prints and was especially renowned for capturing the popularity and charisma of Edo theatre stars.
The cartouche identifies the actor as “Ichimura Kakitsu" (市村橘福), connected to the kabuki world of the famous Ichimura-za theatre in Edo. Actor prints such as this were created for devoted kabuki fans and functioned much like theatrical celebrity portraits of their time.
The composition is visually striking, with deep indigo blues contrasting against the pale theatrical makeup and richly patterned kimono. Fine details in the robes, swords, and pine setting demonstrate the decorative sophistication of late Edo-period woodblock printing.
Condition consistent with age, including visible wear, edge toning, and handling marks. Colors remain attractive overall. Please study the photographs carefully for condition and completeness.
A powerful and highly decorative example of Edo-period kabuki ukiyo-e, ideal for collectors of Japanese woodblock prints and theatre art.
