This technique is said to have derived from "Hangi-horishi," who carved woodblocks for Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. In the Edo period, Hangi-horishi, who possessed advanced techniques for carving precise lines on woodblocks, applied that skill to human skin and began inking tattoos. The handling of "chisels" and "carving knives" used to carve woodblocks led directly to the craftsmanship of inserting needles into the skin to fix the ink.
