Executed by hand in ink and vivid pigments on paper, the compositions are set against a richly applied gold leaf ground, with softly shaped gold clouds that create depth and continuity across the panels. The scenes depict aristocratic figures in traditional court attire, including nobles and elegantly dressed women in layered robes, gathered within and around architectural settings fitted with bamboo blinds. Elements such as a court carriage, landscaped gardens with pine and autumn foliage, and flowing water further enrich the narrative, evoking the refined atmosphere of classical Japanese court culture. These motifs reflect ideals of elegance, seasonal awareness, and cultivated leisure, central to Heian aesthetics. The gold ground enhances the luminosity of the scenes, subtly reflecting light and contributing to the decorative presence of the screens, making them both historically evocative and visually striking as interior art. There is age-related wear throughout. The surfaces show scuffs, tears, stains, and areas of pigment and gold leaf loss. Small insect holes are visible on the painted surfaces and paper. The wooden frames show chips, scratches, and areas of lacquer loss. Some of the metal fittings on the frame are lifting, and a number of fittings are missing. Please refer to the photos for details.
