Field collected on Biak Island (formerly often referred to in older collections as “Yapen Island” during the 1980s and preserved in a European private collection ever since. A fine and expressive wooden Korwar ancestor figure, carved in the distinctive style of the Geelvink Bay region of West Papua. Korwar figures were traditionally created as spiritual representations of ancestors and were believed to contain protective and guiding powers for the living. This example displays a strong sculptural presence, with beautifully weathered wood, an old patina, and the characteristic concentrated facial expression associated with authentic Korwar carvings. The compact seated posture and stylized anatomy reflect the deep ceremonial importance of these figures within Papuan ancestral traditions. Condition: good overall antique condition with age-related wear and minor imperfections consistent with ritual use and age. No disturbing restorations observed.
