A rare ceremonial object made from natural jungle fiber, traditionally used in yam harvest rituals in Papua. Carefully handwoven from plant materials, the piece reflects the close relationship between agricultural life, ritual practice, and ancestral belief systems in the region. It was used during the yam tuber ceremony following the harvest, when the largest and most impressive yams were presented and honored. In these ceremonies, especially significant tubers were decorated and sometimes stylized in human form, symbolically transforming the yam into a living being. This act expressed gratitude to the land and the ancestral forces believed to govern fertility and growth. Collected in the 1970s and preserved in good ethnographic condition, this piece carries strong field provenance and clear ritual significance. The natural fiber structure shows age and authenticity, with a beautiful organic surface and traces of ceremonial use.
