Caroni is an historic rum distillery that was once owned by British sugar merchant, Tate & Lyle, before being nationalised by the Trinidadian government in the 1970s. Founded in 1923 in the heart of the Caroni plains' sugarcane plantations, this famed Trinidad distillery was renowned throughout the world for producing the very best Heavy Rums. This Caroni 17 year old is from the 1998 vintage, distilled and matured for fifteen years on the island. The tropical conditions result in an 80% loss of the distilled spirit through evaporation ('the angel's share'). To perfectly capture the unique Heavy Rum character, Caroni 17 year old has been bottled at 55%. Furthermore, the label is a faithful reproduction of of the original from 1940. Caroni eventually closed its doors in 2003 and the last of the distillery's stock and its brand name were acquired by Italian distributor, Velier.
