Niepoort 2017 Vintage Port — a single bottle from one of the most respected and independently-owned Port houses in the Douro, founded in 1842 and now in its fifth generation under Dirk van der Niepoort. Known for crafting some of the most age-worthy and elegant Vintage Ports of the modern era, Niepoort is consistently rated among the very top producers in Portugal. The 2017 vintage is widely considered an exceptional and historic year in the Douro — one of the hottest and driest growing seasons on record, producing wines of extraordinary concentration, structure and ageing potential. It was declared by virtually every major shipper, a rare event that confirms the vintage’s classic status. This Vintage Port was produced from a field blend of very old vines (80 to 100 years) planted on schistous soils of the Cima Corgo, including Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. The grapes were trodden by foot in traditional granite lagares with 100% stem inclusion, aged in large oak tonéis through the winter, and bottled in 2019 in Vila Nova de Gaia. The wine shows a deep purple core with great aromatic intensity — dark fruit, wild blackberry, cassis, mint and stony, schistous notes. The palate is powerful and structured, with firm but beautifully integrated tannins, balancing power and elegance with a long, fresh finish. A wine built for several decades of cellaring, with critic scores in the 94–96 point range from leading reviewers (Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, Vinous).
