Sepik River Bone Payback Dagger – Papua New Guinea
Rare and authentic bone dagger from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, field collected during the 1990s. Carved from cassowary bone — and possibly used as a ceremonial or “payback” dagger — this striking object embodies the fierce warrior traditions of the Sepik peoples.
Bone daggers from the Sepik were prestige weapons, worn on the arm or tucked into woven armbands by respected men and warriors. They served multiple functions: close-combat weapons, symbols of status and masculinity, and objects imbued with spiritual power. In warfare they were often used to finish a wounded enemy after spear or arrow combat. Some were also associated with ritual vengeance or “payback” killings between clans.
The finest examples were made from human femur bone, though most surviving daggers — including this type — were crafted from the leg bone of the cassowary, the powerful flightless bird revered throughout New Guinea for its strength and aggression. Cassowary bone daggers were highly valued and often beautifully polished and decorated.
This example shows excellent tribal character and honest age wear. A compelling ethnographic object from one of the world’s most artistically rich regions, collected in the field before large-scale tourist production became common.
A rare and evocative piece for collectors of Oceanic tribal art, ethnographic weapons, or Sepik River material culture.
