This elegant flower vase is a fine example of Kutani-yaki (九谷焼), the celebrated porcelain tradition of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Kutani ware has been produced since the mid-17th century, renowned across the world for its bold compositions and richly layered overglaze enamels. This piece exemplifies a style particularly associated with the Meiji and Showa eras, when Kutani artists mastered the art of painting vivid kacho-ga (花鳥画 — bird-and-flower compositions) against deep, lustrous black grounds.
The body of this vase is finished in a deep jet-black glaze, providing a dramatic backdrop for the principal decoration: a magnificent kiji (雉 — green pheasant), Japan's national bird, rendered in meticulous polychrome overglaze enamels and gold. The pheasant's plumage — iridescent blue-green, deep crimson, and warm gold — is captured with extraordinary delicacy, its feathers depicted with fine brushwork. Surrounding the bird are blossoming peony branches, rendered in soft pinks, whites, and greens, evoking the abundance of a Japanese spring garden. The combination of pheasant and peony is a classic auspicious motif in East Asian art, symbolizing beauty, dignity, and good fortune.
The vase features a distinctive rattan handle arching gracefully over the mouth, fitted with elegant gold-tone metal fittings at each end — a refined design element that adds both visual drama and practical elegance, lending the piece the character of a traditional Japanese hanaire (花入) or hanakago (花籠) style vessel. The bottom bears a red Kutani seal mark, confirming its origins in Japan's most celebrated overglaze enamel tradition.
The piece comes with its original storage box.
