Eine Terrakotta-Skulptur. - Bura - Niger (Ohne mindestpreis)

A Bura terracotta headstake from the Niger River Valley belongs to the remarkable funerary tradition of the ancient Bura-Asinda culture, which flourished in present-day southwestern Niger between approximately the 3rd and 13th centuries CE. These terracotta sculptures, often discovered in burial contexts together with large funerary urns, iron objects, beads, and personal ornaments, are among the earliest monumental ceramic traditions of West Africa. Incl stand. The headstake form is generally interpreted as a funerary or memorial object connected to ancestor veneration and mortuary ritual. Many Bura terracotta heads were originally placed above graves, burial mounds, or funerary vessels containing human remains. Their stylized geometric features — flattened faces, perforated eyes, scarification marks, and elongated heads — were probably not intended as realistic portraits, but as spiritual representations of the deceased or protective ancestral presences. (Jaenicke Njoya) The ritual purpose of these headstakes was likely multiple. They may have functioned as guardians of the tomb, intermediaries between the living and the ancestors, or markers identifying lineage, status, or social identity within the necropolis. Archaeological excavations revealed that Bura burials often contained offerings such as iron weapons, jewelry, textiles, and ceramic vessels, suggesting a strong belief in continuity between earthly life and the afterlife. The emphasis on the human head within Bura sculpture reflects a wider West African spiritual concept in which the head represents the seat of the soul, destiny, memory, and spiritual power. The abstract and powerful appearance of Bura heads, sometimes reduced to essential geometric forms, gives them a timeless and deeply ritual character. Some scholars also associate certain Bura terracotta forms with fertility symbolism and regenerative ideas linked to death and rebirth.
