Thomas Höpker was twenty-seven when the illustrated magazine Kristall sent him to America in 1963. "Take a look around," was the brief assignment. It took him from coast to coast through nearly half of the 1960 states. Three months later, he returned with thousands of black-and-white photographs: primarily of people in their everyday lives. Photographed in major cities, but also in rural areas. The report—spread across four issues of the magazine—catapulted him instantly to the forefront of photojournalism. It wasn't a glowing picture he had painted, but behind the skepticism and reservations shone so much curiosity that no one was surprised when, several years later, Thomas Höpker decided to move to America permanently. After a meteoric career, first at the illustrated magazine Stern, and later at the Magnum agency, where he served as president for many years, he retired to New York. But then, in 2020, at the age of eighty-four, Höpker decided to revisit the same journey he had undertaken back then. The book Road Trip, USA intertwines these two projects, placing hundreds of his long-historical photographs alongside contemporary color photographs. In this way, the book takes the viewer on a journey both across the continent and through time.
