Rauchfass - Bronze - Taotie-Bronzen-Räuchergefäß

Title: Bronze Censer with Chilong Lid & Taotie Ornament, Original Paulownia Box Dimensions: H 13.5 × W 14 cm (5.31 × 5.51 in) Weight: 960 g Material: Lost-wax cast bronze Box dimensions: H 16.5 × W 14 cm (6.50 × 5.51 in) Period: Early Showa era, circa 1930–1950 Expert Japanese artisans crafted this censer in the traditional lost‑wax technique, modelled after archaic Shang-Zhou Chinese bronze Gui ritual vessel. Its lid is openworked with interlocking cloud scrolls and crowned by a sculpted coiled chilong dragon fin; open perforations let incense smoke disperse freely. Ornate spear-form beast-head handles flank the body, whose surface is covered entirely in raised Taotie mask relief. Continuous key-fret borders run along the rim and foot, faithfully recreating ancient Chinese bronze ornamentation. The whole bronze bears deep dark-brown patina developed naturally over decades of ageing. In period use, it adorned Japanese tea spaces and refined domestic interiors to burn stick and coil incense. It also functioned as an elegant scholar’s desk ornament, blending practical daily use with collectible decorative merit. Supplied with its contemporary original paulownia storage box featuring gourd-shaped viewing cutouts and yellow lining cloth for secure preservation. The censer bears regular signs of past incense use; incense residue and burning discoloration remain inside the bowl and on the inner side of the lid. The bronze remains intact without dents, cracks or restorations, retaining smooth aged patina alongside minor wear and dust from historic use. The paulownia case shows expected natural wear and dust accumulation consistent with its age; overall in good original condition.
