Seltenes vor dem Krieg hergestelltes japanisches emailliertes Werbeschild „Marukan Su“ (マルカンす) – - Marukan Vinegar Co., Ltd. (マルカン酢株式会社) - Emailleschild - Emaille auf Stahl

Rare Pre-War Japanese Enamel Advertising Sign – Marukan Su (マルカンす) Vinegar | Imperial Warrant Holder | 60 cm Item Description An original Japanese enamel advertising sign (horo-kanban) for Marukan Vinegar (マルカン酢), one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious vinegar manufacturers. This striking vertical sign features the iconic Marukan trademark at the top and the unusual inscription 「マルカンす」 in bold blue lettering. Unlike the more commonly encountered signs reading 「マルカン酢」, this example uses the simpler historical form 「す」, making it a particularly desirable piece for collectors of Japanese advertising memorabilia. Founded in 1649 (Keian 2) during the early Edo period, Marukan is among the oldest vinegar producers in Japan, with a history spanning more than 370 years. The company became so highly regarded that a traditional saying praised its products alongside Japan’s finest sake makers. In 1908, Marukan was granted the distinction of supplying products to the Imperial Household, further enhancing its historical significance. The trademark displayed at the top of the sign is based on a stylized form of the character 「勘」, derived from the name of the company’s second-generation proprietor. This emblem has been used since the 17th century and represents one of the oldest continuously used commercial marks in Japan. The sign is made of enamel-coated steel and retains excellent color contrast, with vivid blue lettering against a clean white background. According to the original source, this piece was discovered as old stock and remained unused for many years. Minor age-related wear, slight warping, and small areas of oxidation are present, particularly around the edges, but overall the sign remains in very good condition for its age. A rare and highly decorative example of pre-war Japanese commercial advertising, ideal for collectors of enamel signs, Japanese folk culture, advertising history, or vintage interior decoration. Size Approx. 60 × 14.5 cm Weight Approx. 390 g Artist Profile — Shipping Information The item will be shipped from Japan via Japan Post with a tracking number.
