Herman Donkelaar (1901-1972) - Shepherd with his flock

A classical Dutch landscape painting depicting a flock of sheep and their shepherd on the heathland (Dutch: Schapen op de hei) near a thatched barn or farm. Main features of the painting: Subject: A shepherd herding his flock of sheep on the heathland covered with characteristic purple-green heather, while a traditional farmhouse is visible in the background. Style: It draws heavily on the traditions of the Haagsche School and the Laren artist colony, where such romantic, rural idylls, pastoral scenes based on the play of light and shadow, were extremely popular during the 19th and 20th centuries. Frame: The painting is housed in an extremely ornate, Baroque-style, gilded stucco frame, which highlights the contemporary bourgeois or gallery value of the work. The work is painted on canvas, but a board was placed behind it at some point to preserve its quality. It is in good condition, small hairs are already visible due to its age. Size 40x80 cm. Brief Life History of Gerrit Hermanus When Gerrit Hermanus Donkelaar was born on 1 November 1901, in Harderwijk, Gelderland, Netherlands, his father, Albert Jan Donkelaar, was 37 and his mother, Lubbertje van Beek, was 29. His occupation is listed as kunstschilder in Harderwijk, Gelderland, Netherlands. He died on 12 October 1972, in Harderwijk, Gelderland, Netherlands, at the age of 70. It can also be picked up in person in Zevenhuizen near Gouda. We can post it carefully packaged, in an insured, registered package.
