A superb example of traditional Japanese bronze craftsmanship, cast using the ancient lost-wax method. This elegant scholar's object combines auspicious symbolism with refined traditional aesthetics, perfect for tea room display, desk ornament, or as a fine example of early 20th century Japanese metalwork. Realistically modelled as a naturalistic crab, the form is vivid and lifelike, the casting powerful and precise. The carapace, claws, legs and eyes are all exquisitely rendered in fine detail, the texture of the shell and the articulation of the eight legs remarkably lifelike. The crab is a classic auspicious motif in East Asian culture, symbolising prosperity, good fortune and success. The base bears the artist's cast seal "Shōa" (正阿), confirming this as an original work by the artist. Presented with a new paulownia wood storage box and cloth. Natural aged patina and minor signs of use consistent with period. No cracks, no damage, no restoration. Overall good condition.
