Item Description This is a fine example of Kamakurabori, a celebrated Japanese traditional lacquerware craft originating in Kamakura during the Kamakura period (1185–1333). This five-drawer chest features an exquisitely hand-carved bamboo motif (take-mon) that cascades dynamically across all five drawer fronts, creating a unified composition of remarkable visual impact. The entire surface is finished in the classic Kamakurabori style: a base layer of deep crimson lacquer (shu-urushi) revealed beneath a bold black overcoat (kuro-urushi), brought to life through deep relief carving. The interplay of black and red creates a dramatic, jewel-like depth that is the hallmark of authentic Kamakurabori work. The background is adorned with a traditional "kikko" (tortoiseshell) hammer-struck texture, further enhancing the tactile richness of the piece. The five drawers are fitted with flat, ebonized wooden pulls in a traditional tsumami style. The chest sits on a plain black lacquered plinth base. The reverse side and interior of the drawers show natural unfinished wood, consistent with authentic handcraft construction.
