13. Nakazato Tarouemon (1924–2009) – Karatsu-Keramik, schwarz glasierte Schale mit Blattmotiv – - Keramik - 13th Nakazato Tarouemon - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert

This work is a Karatsu ware bowl with leaf motif created by the 13th Nakazato Tarouemon (1924–2009), one of the most celebrated masters of modern Karatsu pottery. The bowl features a refined square form covered in a lustrous black glaze. At its center appears a delicate leaf motif, creating a striking contrast against the deep black surface. The simple yet expressive design reflects the Karatsu aesthetic of harmony with nature and understated beauty. The softly contoured form and warm clay character demonstrate the traditional craftsmanship of the Nakazato family, whose ceramic lineage dates back centuries. The rich depth of the black glaze and the elegant leaf decoration combine to create a work that is both functional and highly decorative. Nakazato Tarouemon XIII succeeded to the family name in 1969 and became one of the leading figures of contemporary Karatsu ware. He received numerous distinctions throughout his career, including the Prime Minister’s Award (1981), the Japan Art Academy Prize (1984), designation as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture (1992), and membership in the Japan Art Academy (2007). The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), the official pottery brochure, and a biographical leaflet documenting the artist's career. These original materials further enhance the authenticity and collectibility of the work. Suitable both as a functional vessel and as a display piece, this bowl represents the enduring artistic legacy of the Nakazato family and the tradition of Karatsu ware.
