Abbott moved from Paris to New York in 1921 and, after a few false starts, was hired by her friend Man Ray in 1923. Man Ray was looking for an assistant who knew absolutely nothing about photography to teach him. Abbott learnt quickly and was able to take her first photographs within a year. Her first solo exhibition in 1926 was a success, and over the years Abbott mastered an incredible variety of subjects.
