It is said that Hokusai intentionally limited the color palette to primary tones to achieve this striking contrast. The design depicts a rare natural phenomenon where Fuji's volcanic soil reflects crimson glow when lit by the rising sun at a low angle. This vintage copy was printed in the late 20th century and comes from the leftover stock of master printer Tamotsu Nomura's studio. The print is in excellent condition and shows a crisp and vivid impression. The verso of the print shows slightly raised paper fibers around the cartouche area, which is characteristic of the printing process where firm localized pressure needs to be applied to ensure detailed ink transfer.
