A large Japanese bronze incense burner (koro), standing on four feet and entirely animated by stylized waves. The bowl is surmounted by a powerful ryū dragon, depicted in motion as it coils along the upper rim, which is decorated with numerous Tokugawa family crests (Tokugawa-mon). The refined rendering of the dragon, with finely chiselled scales, sharp claws, curved horns, and a strongly dynamic facial expression, integrates harmoniously with the undulating rhythm of the base, creating a continuous composition of striking sculptural presence. Signed with an incised Nogawa Company mark. In Japanese tradition, the dragon is a symbol of benevolent strength, protection, and dominion over the natural elements, particularly water, here evoked by the wave motif that runs throughout the entire structure.
