Japanischer rustikaler Ame-Glasur-Chawan – Tropfende Eisen-Glasur – signierte Tomobako - Keramik - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert
This elegant Japanese chawan embodies the quiet warmth and natural beauty celebrated in traditional tea ceremony aesthetics.
The bowl features a soft ivory-toned stoneware body accented by expressive flowing ame (amber iron) glaze cascading across the surface. The dark glaze naturally melts and descends over the pale clay, creating dramatic organic patterns reminiscent of mountain landscapes, flowing earth, or ink wash painting.
Its rounded form sits comfortably in the hands, while the subtle asymmetry and gentle variations in glaze density reveal the handmade nature of the piece. The contrast between the calm matte-textured body and the glossy flowing glaze gives the bowl a refined yet deeply rustic presence.
Particularly attractive are the natural kiln effects visible throughout the surface:
soft speckling, slight glaze pooling, iron-rich transitions, and spontaneous firing expressions that could only emerge through high-temperature kiln firing.
The interior remains quiet and balanced, allowing the dramatic exterior glaze movement to become the focal point of the composition. The foot retains a simple and honest treatment consistent with Japanese wabi-sabi pottery traditions.
The original signed tomobako wooden storage box is included.
A highly atmospheric tea bowl suitable for tea practitioners, collectors of Japanese ceramics, and admirers of wabi-sabi aesthetics.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with no cracks or restorations observed. Minor kiln marks, glaze irregularities, firing spots, and natural surface variations are part of the artistic process and aesthetic character of the piece.
