Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was an American photographer and modern art promoter who was instrumental over his 50-year career in making photography an accepted art form. In addition to his photography, Stieglitz was known for the New York art galleries that he ran in the early part of the 20th century, where he introduced many avant-garde European artists to the U.S. He was married to painter Georgia O'Keeffe.' (Wikipedia.com) FIRST EDITION FROM 1983 (not to mix with the second edition from 1999). VERY FRESH CONDITION. "I have all but killed myself for Photography. My passion for it is greater than ever. It's forty years that i have fought its fight - and I'll fight to the finish - single handed and without money if need be. It is not photographs I never sign. I am not fighting to make a "name" for myself. Maybe you have some feeling for what the fight is for. It's a world's fight. This sounds mad. But so is Camera Work mad. All that's born of spirit seems mad in these (days) of materialism run riot." - Alfred Stieglitz to J. Dudley Johnston, 15th of october 1923 - National Gallery of Art, Washington; Callaway Editions, New York. 1983. First edition, second printing. Hardcover with dustjacket. 285 x 365 mm. 248 pages. 73 tritone photographs. Photos: Alfred Stieglitz. Design by Eleanor Morris Caponigro. Edited by Sarah Greenough and Juan Hamilton. Text in English. Dustjacket very fresh and complete with no tears, with no taped tears, with no missing parts; light trace of use, a bit sunned at the rear side. Overall fine condition. Great photobook by Alfred Stieglitz with original dustjacket - in very fresh condition. "Alfred Stieglitz took his first photographs of the artist Georgia O'Keeffe at his gallery '291' in the spring of 1917. His idea of a portrait was not just one photograph but a series of images that would portray many aspects of a person. Beyond physical appearance, Stieglitz's camera explores what is unseen and mysterious in this woman, revealing his own subjective perception of her and at the same time offering a universal perspective on the relationships between all men and women. His Portrait of O'Keeffe, which ultimately comprised more than three hundred photographs taken during a twenty-year period, was and remains revolutionary in its multiplicity, range, and psychological insight. In 1978 The Metropolitan Museum of Art published the first edition of this book, which included fifty-one photographs selected by Georgia O'Keeffe, who wrote a fascinating introduction explaining the origins of these photographs, as well as her reflections on them many years after they were made. Meticulously designed and produced, the volume became an immediate classic and was proclaimed the most beautiful photography book yet published. This edition represents a significant expansion of that book; it is published on the occasion of the Museum's acquisition - through a generous gift - of seventy-four photographs from the Portrait, a group of the most exquisite and beloved photographic prints ever made. To the original plates have been added thirty additional reproductions, so that the Metropolitan Museum's entire collection of prints that make up the Portrait of O'Keeffe is now fully repre-sented. Maria Morris Hambourg, the Museum's curator of photography, provides a thoughtful discussion of the history and meaning of the Portrait, along with technical notes on the plates." (text on the flaps of the book "Alfred Stieglitz - Georgia O'Keeffe, 1995) "Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1864, Alfred Stieglitz was educated in New York and studied mechanical engineering at the Berlin Polytechnic in the early 1880s. In 1883 he turned his attention to photography, which became the major preoccupation of his life. He returned to New York in 1890, joined the Society of Amateur Photographers, became an editor of the American Amateur Photographer, and made his hirst world-famous photographs of New York. In 1897 he founded and edited Camera Notes, becoming the dominant force within the Camera Club. In 1902 he established the in-dependent, innovative Photo-Secession, and founded the superb quarterly camera work, which he published and edited from 1903 to 1917. Its fifty issues recorded the evolution of the avant-garde in photography, painting, sculpture and writing. In 1905 Stieglitz established The Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession at 291 Fifth Avenue, soon to be known as 291. From 1925 to 1929 he directed The Intimate Gallery, and from 1929 until his death, An American Place. He died in New York in July, 1946."
