Antique Silver-Mounted Walking Stick, Sheffield, 1883 & 1884
A finely proportioned late Victorian walking stick featuring a naturally curved crook handle, mounted with decorative sterling silver terminals. The shaft is fashioned from a warm-toned hardwood displaying an attractive natural grain and a mellow patina acquired through age and use. The elegantly shaped handle terminates in matching silver mounts, lending the walking stick a refined and balanced appearance.
The principal silver mount is fully hallmarked for Sheffield, 1884, while the smaller terminal collar is hallmarked for Sheffield, 1883. The principal mount is embossed in repoussé with a foliate mascaron framed by scrolling foliage and beaded borders, while the terminal collar is decorated with a band of stylised rams' heads, creating an elegant decorative scheme characteristic of the late Victorian period.
Presented in good antique condition, the silver mounts display light surface wear and minor age-related imperfections consistent with use. The hardwood shaft has developed a rich patina and shows scattered marks, minor abrasions and small imperfections commensurate with age. The ferrule is no longer present.
An elegant late Victorian silver-mounted walking stick, combining finely detailed repoussé silverwork with a beautifully shaped natural crook handle, making it an attractive addition to any collection of antique walking sticks or country house antiques.
