Item description This striking bronze-toned metal Buddha face plaque reproduces the serene visage of the Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya Bodhisattva) housed at Koryu-ji Temple in Kyoto, one of Japan's most celebrated Buddhist sculptures and among the very first objects designated a National Treasure. Cast with a rich dark patina, the piece captures the gentle, contemplative expression that has made the original wooden statue famous worldwide. The reverse bears a maker's seal, though the characters could not be conclusively identified. The piece is stored in its original wooden tomobako (companion box), the lid of which is inscribed with the characters for Buddha face and Koryu-ji Miroku Bosatsu, with a date corresponding to 1965 noted inside, suggesting it was given as a commemorative gift around that time. A dignified piece of Japanese Buddhist-inspired decorative art, well suited for display or a contemplative space.
