Takaoka Dōki Bronze-Kranichhals-Knospenvase - Bronze - Japan - 1900–2000
Item Description
This is a fine Japanese bronze bud vase produced using the techniques of Takaoka Dōki, a nationally designated Traditional Craft of Japan originating in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture — a region celebrated for over 400 years as the country's foremost center of cast metalwork.
The vase has a classic "tsurukubi" (crane-neck) silhouette: a rounded, bulbous body that tapers into a slender cylindrical neck before flaring outward into a trumpet-shaped mouth, all raised on a small circular pedestal foot. The surface is finished in a rich, warm coppery-red tone mottled throughout with dark bronze and gold-flecked patina, creating a striking marbled, stone-like texture that is unique to each hand-finished piece. Each stage of the piece — casting, shaping, and coloring — was carried out by skilled Takaoka craftsmen using techniques passed down through generations.
The base bears an impressed character mark. The vase is accompanied by its original paulownia wood storage box (tomobako), inscribed by brush with characters identifying the piece — a strong indication that this was treated as a valued item by its original owner.
A wonderful, decorative accent piece for a shelf, tokonoma alcove, or display case; ideal as a single-stem ("ikebana") flower vase.
