Elliott Erwitt - On the Beach (Japanese edition) - 1991

On the Beach (Japanese edition) Elliott Erwitt JICC/1991/japanese/225*263*15 “On the Beach,” a collection of works by photographer Elliott Erwitt, who was born in Paris in 1928 and is currently based in New York. Elliott Erwitt fled to the United States at the age of 11 to escape the ravages of war; he developed an interest in photography while working as a darkroom assistant in Hollywood and went on to study photography at Los Angeles City College. He moved to New York at the age of 20 and began his career as a professional photographer in 1949. At age 25, recommended by Robert Capa, he joined the Magnum Photos collective and later served as its president. In addition to his documentary work as a photojournalist, Arwit captured everyday scenes with wit and humor, earning worldwide acclaim through his work in magazines and advertising. This book is the Japanese edition of a photo collection originally published in the early 1990s. Much like Masaharu Ueda’s *Dunes*, it is composed of images of “beaches”—a setting Arwit has long used as his canvas. It is a compelling collection featuring numerous works that capture the distinctive character of beaches not only in the United States but also in South America and Europe.
