Äthiopische Kopfstütze – Oromo/Arsi-Zuschreibung – Holz (Ohne mindestpreis)

Ethiopian headrest – Oromo / Arsi attribution – wood Details Origin: Ethiopia People / Region: Oromo / Arsi attribution Material: Wood Dimensions: 18 x 6 x 16.5 cm high Period: probably first half of the 20th century Provenance: Collected locally in Ethiopia by the present owner Description An elegant Ethiopian wooden headrest, attributed to the Oromo / Arsi area. Headrests of this type were used to support the head while resting, helping to preserve elaborate hairstyles. Beyond their practical function, they are also highly sculptural personal objects, often carried and used over a long period of time. This example is especially appealing for its unusual planar construction. The whole form seems to be organized within a single vertical plane: a central column supports the upper resting platform, while two curved arcs extend below and above, creating a light and graphic structure. The upper rest is gently curved, with raised ends and a smooth surface shaped by use. The lower part forms a second arc, acting both as base and visual counterpoint to the upper crescent. This gives the object a striking sense of balance, almost like an abstract architectural drawing in wood. The surface shows a beautiful old patina, with warm reddish-brown tones, darker areas and polished high points. The incised decoration, visible on the arcs and base, is now partly softened by age and handling, adding to the quiet character of the piece. A very attractive and atypical Ethiopian headrest, appreciated for its elegant flat construction, balanced arcs, softened engraved decoration and deep old usage patina. Condition Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, small losses, cracks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Old loss to the lower arc. Traces of stabilized xylophage activity, especially under the base. Incised decoration partly softened by use. Beautiful old usage patina. Please refer to the photographs. Included The object only. No stand included.
