Asante-Zeremonialschwert „Afena“ – Ghana – Eisen und fein geschnitztes Holz.

Asante ceremonial sword “afena” – Ghana – iron and finely carved wood Details Origin: Ghana People: Asante / Ashanti Type: Ceremonial sword, “afena” Material(s): Iron, carved wood Dimensions: 58 cm long Period: probably early 20th century Provenance: Ex private French collection Description A remarkable Asante ceremonial sword, known as afena, from Ghana. Among the Asante, ceremonial swords formed an important part of court regalia. They were not merely weapons, but signs of rank, authority and prestige, carried or displayed during official ceremonies, chiefly contexts and ritual occasions. Prestigious Asante swords often have handles covered with gold leaf, emphasizing their status within royal and chiefly regalia. This example is more sober in material, with a raw carved wooden handle, but stands out for the exceptional quality and refinement of its sculpture. The handle is richly carved with remarkable precision. It is decorated with human faces, animal figures and dense geometric motifs, all arranged over a complex architectural structure of rounded volumes and cylindrical sections. The carving is extremely fine, with cross-hatching, linear patterns and small figurative details giving the object a strong visual and symbolic presence. The iron blade is strongly oxidized and has an openwork structure, giving it an aged and almost archaeological character. The contrast between the oxidized blade and the finely worked wooden handle gives the sword a powerful presence. This is a ceremonial object of great character, appreciated for the quality of its carving, its old patina, its strong Asante court association and its expressive sculptural force. Condition Good condition overall for an object of this age and type. The iron blade is strongly oxidized. Old loss to the wooden handle; the surrounding wood is deeply patinated. Wear, abrasions, cracks, small losses and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Beautiful old patina on the carved wooden handle. Please refer to the photographs. Included The sword only. The stand shown in the photographs is not included.
